Book Review – Folly de Grandeur, by Nicky Haslam

A book I return to often, not just for the pictures, but for the character and spirit of its writer, Folly de Grandeur – Romance and Revival in the English Country House is a joy to read, learn from and be inspired by. Written about a historic home called The Hunting Lodge that Haslam had leased from the National Trust for over two decades, and that was prior in the care of legendary English decorator John Fowler, the book offers an intimate portrait of a house and its surrounding gardens brimming with history and charm. This is a story anglophiles will absolutely love.

Among all design books, those written about a single home are truly special, and possibly my favorite. The Bee Cottage Story, An Affair with a House, Folly de Gradeur – they all share through their pages the love and dedication of an owner passionate about their house, and it’s irresistible. It also helps that Nicky Haslam is an excellent writer and one of the most well-connected people in the UK, whose friendships are as varied and surprising as his taste. Anecdotes about the many famous folk who’ve visited its walls, and sage decorating & entertaining advice from the one who’s obviously done it all and has done it well, will entertain and delight.

Folly de Grandeur leaves no brick unturned and carefully documents every nook and cranny of this diminutive yet grand property. Below are only a few favorite images that I have marked to study up close, although there are plenty more. Hope you enjoy!

In recent years, Nicky Haslam has moved out of The Hunting Lodge and many of its treasures were auctioned off through Bonhams. Although the Lodge sits now empty, House & Garden documented Haslam’s home in a lovely video which you can view here. To read more about the The Hunting Lodge and its incredibly journey, you can order a copy of Haslam’s book Folly de Grandeur- Romance and Revival in the English Country House. Take care!

Such a pretty home. I’ve always wanted to buy that book. I may have to put it on my list. Thanks for always sharing my favorite style of decor.
