Captain Overton House Tour – Part 1

Known for its great design, quaint charm and artsy atmosphere (former home to the likes of John Steinbeck and William Demby), the coastal village of Sag Harbor, New York is a cool little indie haven filled with historical houses waiting for a kind restoration. One of many such homes is the 42 Howard Street house commissioned by sea captain John Overton in 1853, located at the heart of the historical district. A couple of years ago, this house was purchased by designer Steven Gambrel, known for his passion for historical homes and restoration, and given new life.

Steven Gambrel together with Historical Concepts reconstructed the entire house to fit the needs of 21st century living, while paying careful attention to architectural details that were typically found in homes of the era.

An extension, custom-made shutters and fresh landscaping make the home almost unrecognizable!

A guest house addition increases the livable space footprint and makes it the perfect place to invite friends over.

The interiors are decorated in a pretty palette of blues and grays – a natural choice that reflects the home’s coastal location- warmed up with accents of natural wood, leather, orange and brass.  Wide antique pine flooring, custom millwork and paneling as well as custom English hardware and antique furnishings preserve the historical character of the house.

Open shelving and ample windows make the kitchen feel modern and light. There’s such a beautiful tension between the antique farmhouse table that doubles as an island, and the modern metal chairs. I love how the cool grays played off from the marble veining contrast against the warm brass finishes.
