Create Your Perfect Home – A Create Academy Course by Rita Konig

In December of last year Create Academy launched an intriguing course called Create Your Perfect Home, taught by renowned British decorator Rita Konig. Like many of you, I’m sure, I was very excited at the idea of having Rita Konig pull back the curtains on her projects and share a glimpse inside her processes. We’ve seen her genius at work in one of the most talked about and admired homes ever published – a Mill Valley camp turned family home by architect Gil Schafer in collaboration with Rita Konig, so this Create Academy course definitely has us paying attention. I have just finished watching the entire course this weekend and I thought I’d share a short review here on the blog, in case you are interested in taking the class but unsure of whether or not it’s a good fit.

First of all, buying this course was the best gift I’ve given myself this holiday season. The sequence of videos made me feel like I was chatting with on old friend, one with exquisite taste and decorating savior faire. Using North Farm (her family’s recently renovated farmhouse  in Durham) as an example, Konig  walks us through the main aspects of decorating a house, from planning, budgeting and construction work to creating furniture layouts, cohesive color schemes and fabric selections.  Nearly five hours of instructional videos melt away under the immense pleasure of listening to Konig’s advice and the experience is eye-opening. Here you have an incredibly talented woman who has decorating in her DNA (having grown up in the world of interior design alongside her famous decorator mom, Nina Campbell) and yet she is sharing favorite sources, triumphs and mistakes with equal candor. One thing is clear: decorating is second nature to Konig, an organic process done with refinement, confidence and ease. Likewise, her advice is down to earth and sensible, and it gives great comfort to anyone who’s in the process of decorating a home.  I’ve shared below glimpses of the TV room at North Farm, one of my favorite spaces Rita’s cleverly pulled together in this project and of which she talked about at length through the course.

To conclude, Create Your Perfect Home is an absolute joy to watch and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in interior design. I also loved Rita Konig’s class and would love it if other designers created one, Ben Pentreath, Bunny Williams, Cathy Kincaid, a girl can dream. On another note, I didn’t receive your last two posts via email and am wondering if there’s a glitch in your blog delivery. That being said, I think your blog is really wonderful, informative, and interesting. I always look forward to your new posts.

Hello, Tami! Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment. I appreciate your feedback and I’ll have to look into that glitch in the blog delivery system. Thank you! P.S. Great suggestion about more decorating classes with the greats of design. I love Masterclass and they are doing something similar for the arts so maybe one day soon we’ll get to hear Bunny Williams impart decorating wisdom. (Or at least we can dream 🙂 ) xo, Eva

Great post, Eva! And what a wonderful gift to receive, especially considering that you are starting your own decorating project in your new home.
I also love your blog, as it’s not riddled with ads like so many others!

Beautiful post, Eva! Love Rita’s work. There is a book that I just discovered but came out 4 years ago called “Love The House You’re In” by Paige Rien that is along the same lines as Rita’s work shop (at least sounds like it to me). Very helpful book in my opinion.

AHHHHHHH!!!! I just popped over to Create Academy and watched the trailer for the course! I’m tempted to purchase just for the fact that her British accent is JUST like Princess Diana’s, who I love! Love love love Rita’s “style” but love love love her Princess Diana accent! LOL
