No surprise, I love collecting design reads. Magazines, books, you name it. Over time, I’ve bought numerous books that promise great stories of interesting projects, hoping to get a glimse into the magic that happens behind the curtains yet so many of them end up being a disappointment… So today I’m sharing with you a short list of my favorites, published within the last year or so, that I constantly turn to for inspiration and why not, a good laugh!
With exceptional writing and a down-to-earth approach to creating beautiful, personal spaces, at the top of my list is by far The Bee Cottage Story- by Frances Schultz. I’ve mentioned this one before but I have to admit: this book had me laughing out loud, something you wouldn’t normally expect from a decorating book. Maybe that’s because it’s not the usual decorating read… Of all the lovely homes I’ve seen, this little cottage stole my heart! Must get your hands on this one!
Another book that’s an absolute gem for professional designers as well as design enthusiasts is Lauren Liess’s Habitat-The Field Guide to Decorating. Designed as a manual on how the design process is done in her firm, Lady Liess covers everything from the fundamental elements of design (floor plans, lighting, choosing color palettes) to different ways to create charm in your home. Pleasure to follow and easy to read, destined to become a classic!
The second book of creative couple Brooke and Steve Gianetti, Patina Farm documents their journey of building their dream home. This gorgeous book is not just pretty to look at, but it’s packed with great advice on how to achieve a similar aesthetic. And even if design is not your thing, Patina Farm will make you feel things…
Now, if you love a good flea-market and get high on thrifting, this book is perfect for you. And me! Eddie Ross in his Modern Mix teaches one everything there is to know about antiques shopping and treasure hunting just like a pro. Big thumbs up and keep this one close!
This next book just got here, I’m still reading it as we speak but I had to include it in today’s list since the graphics alone are glorious! Kathryn at Home by Kathryn M.Ireland. I’ve always, always loved Kathryn’s fun ways with decor. Not so much a decorating read, this book is, as she puts it, a ¨scrapbook of recipes, tabletop decor, notes from various journals¨ all accentuated with pretty, happy fabrics.
And finally, Amazon’s #1 decorating book release of this fall, Beautiful-by Mark D. Sikes! This one will be a very special treat. Can’t wait…
There are so many other great design books I love but these are on my mind and on my night table right now. What about you? What are your favorite design books (recent or not)? Do share 🙂
