Earlier this month, Jennifer Ash Rudick released her much anticipated book Out East and ever since I got my copy I’ve been smitten. A collection of some of the most beautiful homes on the east end of Long Island, the book gives us an insider’s view to life in the Hamptons. The design sensibility of the author coupled with well appointed homes decorated by some of the world’s most influential designers make Out East a book that every design aficionado would appreciate.
That being said, among the many fabulous homes featured in Jennifer’s new book one stood out like no other. The East Hampton cottage of Laura and Harry Slatkin, the power couple behind luxury home fragrance company NEST steals the show. I’m pretty sure you’ve seen pictures of it on social media but I can’t help sharing it here as well.
From the outside, the house looks like an ivy-covered storybook cottage. Beautiful diamond mullions lend it charm and character. Located on Lily Pond Lane (how sweet is that?), the house is surrounded by gardens a short walk away from the beach. After renting it for several years, the couple purchased it as soon as it hit the market. Understandably!
The interiors were taken care of in the family. Harry’s brother, designer Howard Slatkin outfitted the rooms with a folly of blue and white fabrics, hand-printed and embroidered in the Far East. Checks, paisleys, florals, they blend and cover every inch of the decor.
More than a summer house, this cottage is the family’s weekend retreat year-round so the interiors must work well for all seasons. After all, what’s more timeless than blue and white? One of the great details to notice in this house is how Howard placed together the high and the low: sisal and gilt, rattan chairs and exquisite chinoiserie porcelain, antiques and the modern… It’s that tension and all the beautiful blues that we love so much!
