Modern Mix – A Beautiful Home Designed by Lauren Liess

It’s been a while now that I’ve been following the work of super talented Virginia based designer Lauren Liess and today I’m gonna share with you the makeover to make all other makeovers jealous! Her dreamy 70s home in Oakton, VA (that sold recently) underwent an amazing six-month rehab at the end of which it got published in the spring 2014 issue of Domino.

When creating spaces for her family and her clients, Lauren’s design aesthetic is that of comfortable, natural luxury, beauty without perfection.  Her homes feel luxurious, yet relaxed, collected over time and lived-in as opposed to decorated. A trademark of her style is the strong indoor-outdoor quality of her designs. She loves to incorporate plenty of natural elements like raw wood furniture pieces, natural fiber rugs (wool, sisal and jute), linen curtains, iron and brass, using a palette of mostly whites, ivories, golds and camel. And here is the makeover!

The original living room felt dark and dated, stuck in the 70s:

The living room after, with an open floor plan that is modern and more suitable for a young family:

I love the sputnik chandelier and the clean lines of the fireplace. And those beams…

The kitchen before was average looking and closed off from the rest of the home:

… and the kitchen after, open and light, and fabulous. The upper cabinets were replaced with iron bakers racks that keep the space uncluttered. The fridge got moved to the opposite wall.

… and the loft / library after! My favorite room in this makeover, has everything I could ask for: a comfortable window seat, awesome views, and plenty of books…

The bookshelves are IKEA butcher blocks used in the most ingenious way 😉

The bedroom before had very little privacy with three different entries and windows overlooking the garage:

Lauren created a gallery wall above the bed with prints she had collected over the years and installed sliding doors that lead to a charming little private bedroom garden equipped with an outdoor shower!

What a lovely view to wake up to!!

Pretty amazing, right? And what’s even more amazing is that Lauren owns her very successful design firm, she’s a wife and mother of four kids and two pups, the writer of the popular blog The Pure Style Home, and had her first design book Habitat: The  Field Guide to Decorating published recently! Now this is what I call superpowers!

I hope you enjoyed today’s post! To see the rest of this renovation, head over to Domino for the feature or you can read about the entire remodel on Lauren’s blog! Make sure to leave a comment to tell me which one of these rooms is your favorite!
