The fashion legacy of singer, actress and songwriter Jane Birkin is undeniable. Over the last several decades, her bohemian, effortlessly cool style has influenced women everywhere. She has changed and shaped the way people dress and her influence is still as powerful as ever. As proof, not a day goes by that her signature feminine look does not grace my screen on any number of my social media followings.
Flared jeans, leather belts, cotton shirts, knee-high socks, flats and impossible mini-dresses are all part of what made English-born Jane the epitome of French girl cool. Clearly, sixties cool meant forever cool for Jane as all these style elements are still a staple today. In honor of her recent 70th birthday, here are some of her best looks. Her beauty is timeless…
Fashion felt easy and relaxed with every wardrobe choice she made. Peasant blouses, long tresses and teared jeans were beautifully complemented with her trademark straw bag. As humble as that sounds, it has inspired the namesake Hermès bag, which today retails around $100,000 or more. In 1981, Jean-Louis Dumas, chief executive of Hermès was seated next to Jane on a Paris-London flight. When Jane placed her straw bag in the overhead comportment, the contents of it fell out. A fortunate incident some might say, as it left her complaining about how she could never find a leather weekend bag she liked. In response, in 1984 Hermès created a black supple leather bag with Jane in mind, naming it the Birkin Bag. Over the years, the Birkin bag has become a coveted piece and a symbol of status.
