The Magic of Blue and White

UPDATE: For those of you disappointed that the Chinese spice jars linked in this post are sold out, I’m including a similar piece down below.

If you’re looking for a timeless color palette that is both soothing and universally appealing, then blue and white is certainly something to consider. It ages well, as witnessed by these wonderful rooms, and can be combined with earthier hues like camels, tans and browns, to create spaces that look both fresh and inviting. Blue looks good on its own but it awakens to new heights next to pinks, reds and greens, and has the ability to combine in ever different and surprising ways.

Although we’ve seen our fair share of blue and white rooms lately, I believe that some of them are extremely successful because they achieve that delicate balance of texture, warmth and variety of finishes. Below are a few of my favorite instances of blue and white, by some of my favorite designers: Markham Roberts, Steven Gambrel, Suzanne Tucker, Mark D. Sikes, Tom Scheerer, Cathy Kincaid, Lee Ann Thornton, Rita Konig, Carrier & Co…

I’ve also compiled a short list of blue and white items that have been on my radar lately, in case you’re in the mood for some retail therapy.  Just click on the number and you’ll be taken to the corresponding retailer.

Unfortunately, the spice jars (#3, #4) are sold out at the moment but I found a similar handmade temple jar still available – linked below.

Hope you found something you like in today’s post! I’d love to hear your thoughts on blue and white… Take care!

I have always loved Blue and White for decor colors and three of the rooms in my house reflect this. I think they are classic and will never be out of style but I do wish every decorating magazine this spring would not all be dominated by these same colors. As I like variety in my home ,I like it in the media.
It is grey and gloomy here this morning and I guess my mood reflects it. Sorry for griping. Love your photos and blog.

No need to apologize, Kathy! It’s gray and gloomy in these parts as well.. And I agree with you that there are so many blue and white rooms out there these days, too many. My point with this post (and I think I should have been more clear) is that most of them are not, well, good. Filling rooms with blue and white porcelain is not what I think of as good design, yet we see it everywhere…
For me it’s the layering of architecture, and textures, and everything else that makes a room work, the blue and white color scheme just happens to be the cherry on top. It’s a bit like magic, many can try but few can do the tricks well 🙂
      Take care! xoxo, Eva

Am refreshing my blue and white scheme to add in more neutral grey and linen/cream. This was great inspiration at just the right moment.
